How I Learned to Improve My Golf Swing -Part 2

What I Learned About Creating a Better Golf Swing

Everyone wants to enjoy golf, and at the same time, everyone wants to play better.

But many people do not clearly form the thought of how they want to swing.

What does that mean?

Many of us seem to believe that our body will somehow know what to do. We think our body will naturally turn, the club will come down correctly, and the ball will be struck well.

I used to think the same way.

But my golf game did not improve very much.

At first, I simply thought, “I need to hit the ball well with the clubhead.”

Sometimes I hit it well.

Sometimes I did not.

Then I started asking myself, “Why can’t I hit it consistently?”

I tried one thought, then another thought, but I eventually realized something important.

Before the body can perform a good action, the mind needs a clear idea of what that action should be.

Just as good thinking can lead to good actions, a good golf swing begins with a clear idea of the swing.

Golf is not simply about making the clubhead hit the ball.

Golf is about creating a good swing.

When we watch professional golfers, we often see them practicing their swings again and again.

But many amateur golfers look at them and only think about how well the clubhead strikes the ball.

That is where the difference in thinking begins.

From my own experience, I learned that it is more helpful to think about making a good body movement and a good swing path than simply trying to hit the ball with the clubhead.

When the body makes a good swing and the clubhead travels on the correct path, the club naturally passes through the ball.

The first goal should be to create a good swing.

When the swing becomes good, the ball begins to be struck well more naturally.

So before swinging, I believe we need to build this thought in our mind:

“I need to make a good swing.”

Without that thought, it may be difficult to create a good swing consistently.

In many areas of life, we first create a thought in our mind, and then our actions follow.

If the thought is clear and accurate, the action also has a better chance of becoming clear and accurate.

Golf may be the same.

So I want to ask you:

Have you ever clearly thought about what a correct golf swing should feel like before you swing?

If you have, you may already be discovering why golf can become much more enjoyable.
