Building Standards in Your Heart (Part 1): Discovering the Meaning of Love
Building a Standard of Love in Your Heart
What does love truly mean to you?
Have you ever created your own standard of love?
Or has your understanding of love simply been shaped by television dramas, your parents, your friends, or the opinions of other people?
Many of us live within the boundaries of the ideas about love that we have gathered throughout our lives. Without realizing it, we often express only the kind of love that already exists in our minds.
If we want to experience a deeper, greater, and more beautiful love, we must continue learning. Some people learn about love through the Bible. Others discover it through books written by thoughtful authors or through the examples of people who genuinely care for others.
The important thing is that we intentionally build a clear standard of love within our own hearts.
For example, you might define love like this:
● Love is caring for others more than yourself.
● Love is being willing to make sacrifices for someone else’s well-being.
● Love is comforting people when they are struggling and staying by their side.
● Love is walking with someone through difficult times instead of leaving them alone.
● Love is gently understanding another person’s heart and giving them hope that someone truly cares.
When these kinds of standards are firmly planted in our hearts, expressing love becomes much more natural.
Without a clear standard, it is difficult to express love accurately. We simply react according to the ideas that have already been stored in our minds.
Think about a simple example. If you cannot remember a friend’s phone number, you cannot call that friend. In the same way, if your mind has no clear understanding of what love is, it becomes difficult to express love through your actions.
However, when you build a meaningful standard of love within yourself and practice it by caring for others, serving them, and showing compassion, something wonderful happens. Not only do other people receive love, but your own heart also becomes happier. At the same time, you learn how to love yourself in a healthy and meaningful way.
That is why each of us should intentionally build a beautiful standard of love within our hearts—a love that is kind, compassionate, generous, joyful, selfless, and willing to care for others.
The standards we build in our hearts today will become the love we express tomorrow.
