Building Standards in Your Heart (Part 3): When Different Understandings of Love Conflict

When Different Standards of Love Meet

In life, there are times when we receive love and times when we give it. Sometimes we are the ones who need love. At other times, someone else needs our love. There are also moments when both people are trying to love each other at the same time.

Yet even when both people have good intentions, conflicts can still arise.

Why does this happen?

Too often, people argue, become frustrated, hurt one another, and drift apart without understanding the real reason behind the conflict.

One important reason is that every person has developed a different understanding of love.

Our ideas about love are shaped by our families, our experiences, our culture, and the environment in which we were raised. Because of this, each person carries a unique standard of what love looks like.

When two people express love according to different standards, misunderstandings are almost inevitable.

It is actually quite rare for two people to have exactly the same expectations and understanding of love. Even brothers and sisters who grow up in the same family often develop different ways of thinking and different ways of expressing love.

That is why patience is so important.

Instead of reacting immediately with anger or giving up on the relationship, we should give one another time to understand, adjust, and grow. As people continue communicating and learning from each other, their understanding of love can gradually change and become stronger.

Many relationships become healthier because both people are willing to wait, listen, and make adjustments.

On the other hand, when impatience, anger, or pride takes over, relationships often become damaged. People separate, grow distant, and carry emotional wounds that could have been avoided.

Perhaps one of the greatest lessons about love is this:

Before judging someone, remember that their standard of love may simply be different from yours.

When we respect those differences and patiently learn from one another, both the love we give and the love we receive can become deeper, wiser, and more beautiful.

Have you ever taken the time to patiently wait for the sake of someone else?
