The Meaning We Give Creates Happiness and Unhappiness

The Meaning We Give Today Becomes Our Happiness or Unhappiness Tomorrow

In general, everyone knows what the words happiness and unhappiness mean. These two experiences are always present in our daily lives. At times we feel happy, and at other times we feel unhappy. However, happiness and unhappiness do not simply appear on their own. Nothing comes into existence without a cause.

Both happiness and unhappiness begin somewhere else.

Whenever we do something, we naturally judge it. We think, “This is good,” or “This is bad.” We assign meaning to our actions and experiences, often without even realizing it. Every judgment, every interpretation, and every meaning we attach to an event becomes a small deposit into our hearts.

If we repeatedly give positive meaning to our actions and experiences, those positive deposits gradually accumulate. Over time, they grow into a deep sense of satisfaction, gratitude, and fulfillment. Eventually, that inner accumulation expresses itself as happiness.

On the other hand, if we continually assign negative meaning to our experiences, or if we repeatedly focus on what is bad, unfair, or hopeless, those thoughts also accumulate. Little by little, they become a heavy burden within us. In time, that burden grows into unhappiness.

This is much like saving money in a bank. Every small deposit may seem insignificant, but after many deposits, the balance becomes large. Likewise, every thought, every interpretation, and every meaning we give to life becomes a deposit in the bank of our

When we consistently choose positive meaning, our hearts become richer. We feel fulfilled, peaceful, and grateful. But when negative meanings continue to pile up, they eventually form a large weight that can become the beginning of unhappiness.

If we understand this principle, we become more aware of how we live each day. We begin to ask ourselves:

“What meaning am I giving to this moment?”

The answer to that question determines what we are building inside ourselves. It helps us understand not only what we will gain in the future, but also what kind of heart we should have today.

In the end, our happiness or unhappiness is not created in a single moment. It is built little by little through the meanings we choose to give to our lives.

Have you ever experienced something like this? Have you ever taken a moment to think about these things?
